Hebrews 2:10-18
I realize your question before you ask! Pastor, why so many notes today? Can’t we get a break? My answer is, you will! My answer also is, if you don’t get this today, you won’t get Jesus! This information in Hebrews is critical to who we are as Christians! The Word of God is the life blood and conduit in which the Holy Spirit moves! Pay close attention to God’s Word!
The Suffering Servant is the Source of Salvation vv.10-13
- The plan was made perfect v.10 We see this plan in verse 9 in which the author states, “because of suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.” You have to read this passage and verse 10 from the perspective of the Jew of that time. The lamb, would be killed, the blood would be shed for the forgiveness of sin. Christ, the lamb, must suffer, for our salvation. This doesn’t make sense! You and I should be at awe of such a great salvation! We should be like accident victims who realize our lives have been spared! (spinning Toyota truck) Isaiah 53:5 shows us that it was God’s plan for you and I to be loved so extravagantly! “But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed.”
- The adoption was made final vv. 11-13 Ephesians 1:4-5 “even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,” We see the adoption theology of Paul here and that of John in which God the Father has made us brothers, not that we’re equal to Christ, but that we’re heirs of the Kingdom of God and of Christian growth and maturity. We are made sons and daughters of God, through the adoption payment of Jesus blood. Verse 13 comes directly from Isaiah 8:18. Like the former passages, this two would have been rooted in the Old Testament of Isaiah 8 and Psalm 22. The language would awaken a Jewish community to see an invitation to become a brother or sister, an adopted son or daughter from the long awaited Messiah!
The Messiah Became a Man to Deliver Us from the Master of Death vv.14-16
Hypostatic Union: the combination of divine and human natures in the single person of Christ. The theological doctrine that Jesus was fully God and fully man. Philippians 2:6-7 “who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”
- Jesus can relate “he himself likewise partook of the same things” v.14
John 11:35 “Jesus Wept.”
- Jesus has and will destroy death v.14 (emphasis on past and future tense)
- Jesus will destroy Satan v.14 1 John 3:8 “Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.”
- Jesus has delivered the enslaved from the fear of death v.15 Paul says, “death where is your sting!”
- Jesus is dedicated to helping his children v.16
The High Priest Made the Full Payment vv.17-18
Propitiation: to appease for or make a sacrificial payment for sin. It is a substitutional payment to reconcile a relationship between a Holy God and sinful man. (Someone paid your speeding ticket) In the South people know about Jesus, there’s a kind of cultural Christianity. The problem is that people don’t realize they’re lost, that Christ can pay the just wrath of God that we so deserve, if we surrender to Christ!
You know the difference between Karma and Grace? Karma is getting what we deserve! Grace is getting what we don’t deserve because of Christ!
- The Priest offers the sacrifice on our behalf v.17 They would have understood the priesthood, because he was the one designated to offer the sacrifice. Jesus did that, for us! He was the sacrifice.
- He suffered to be a servant v.18 The greatest way to show love is to come in person to show how much you love someone. He came to earth, to relate to us, die in our place, to pay our sins, so that we could enjoy Jesus forever! If this doesn’t feel you with overwhelming gratitude, you do not know Him!
Because Jesus died in my place for my sins:
I am not guilty (Romans 3:25–26; 6:23; 8:1). I am not cursed (Galatians 3:13–14). I am not defeated (Colossians 2:14–15; Hebrews 2:14–15). I am not crushed (Isaiah 53:5; 2 Corinthians 4:8–10). I am not forsaken (Mark 15:33–36; Hebrews 13:5–6). I am not unclean (2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24).
I am not without hope (Romans 5:1–11; 8:18-39).
If this doesn’t excite you, you will not enjoy Heaven! Why? Because Heaven is reserved for those who feel the unending gravity of their sin, yet are overjoyed by the removal of it by Christ the King!
