Jesus is All We Need
John 2:13-22
A relationship with Jesus is about worship, not wealth. vv.13-17.
(Background as to why they sold animals at the temple)
What did Jesus see in the money changers? Look at verse 25. A religious front for greed. He knew their heart.
Luke 16:13 “No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
“…the prosperity gospel is fundamentally flawed. At bottom, it is a false gospel because of its faulty view of the relationship between God and man. Simply put, if the prosperity gospel is true, grace is obsolete, God is irrelevant, and man is the measure of all things. Whether they’re talking about the Abrahamic covenant, the atonement, giving, faith, or prayer, prosperity teachers turn the relationship between God and man into a quid pro quo transaction. As James Goff noted in a 1990 Christianity Today article, God is “reduced to a kind of ‘cosmic bellhop’ attending to the needs and desires of his creation.” This is a wholly inadequate and unbiblical view of the relationship between God and man.” –The Gospel Coalition
A relationship with Jesus is about salvation, not signs. vv.18-20.
They didn’t need more signs, they needed a heart transformation. It’s a deflection, a trick to cover up the real issue, an adulterous relationship with the world. Today, the building is not the temple of God! Jesus is the temple! The church is not the building, it’s the people who are temples of the Holy Spirit!
A relationship with Jesus means promises fulfilled, not profitable finances. vv.21-22.
John 10:17-18 “For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
Jesus fulfills His promise and will do the same for you and I!
Matthew 13:44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”
Jesus is the treasure! Don’t replace the true treasure with the sewage of the world, it will never satisfy!
Jesus plus nothing equals everything!
