John 4:1-29
A Calling to Never Thirst Again vv.1-15
There was a sovereign purpose for Him to go through Samaria! Samaria is looked at by the Jews as a second class, or as a racially discredited people. Jesus had compassion, it appears especially upon those who are socially discredited. There is a sovereign purpose for you to be here this morning! You may be experiencing great discomfort in your life, only He can bring comfort! You may be struggling with deep ingrained sin, only He can free you from that slavery! You may be prideful, only He can humble you, convict you, and transform you! It’s the power of the living water! He is “welling up like a spring.” He does this for every born again believer! This well is referred to in Chapter seven as the Holy Spirit.
Luke 15:11-32 is about the Prodigal Son. Very similar to this text in many ways. We are the prodigal son or the promiscuous woman. This passage is about us! We need Christ! Not fame, not more money, not better health, not more strength, just Christ! We don’t have to be slaves to sin, the world, circumstance, we are satisfied in Christ!
Philippians 4:19 “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
A Calling to be Remade Anew vv.16-26
2 Corinthians 5:16-18
From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;”
A Calling to Announce to All Where Living Water is Found vv.27-29, 39.
Jeremiah 20:9
If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,” there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.
Acts 4:18-20 “So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.”
