We need three things in our pursuit of God: 1. The first great needs is that we need a word from God. We need a way to communicate with God! In the Old Testament this was fulfilled through the prophets. Now it’s fulfilled through Christ! Allow me to share the other two needs as we go through the rest of the text in a few moments.
Jesus is the Word vv. 1-2 John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Romans 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
The point of Hebrews in found in the phrase “consider Jesus,” therefore, think of Jesus! Sounds like something you’d say to nonbelievers, consider Jesus. Your marriage is following apart, consider Jesus! This book was written to the church! Think of Jesus, this is our cry!
- Jesus is the needed apostle. v.1 The word apostle means sent one. Jesus has come and He is the Word.
- Jesus is the needed high priest. v.1 The high priest in the Old Testament was the go between God and man!
Jesus is to be Worshipped vv.3-4 Why is Jesus superior to Moses? He is superior because He made Moses! The second need that every person is created with, is the need to worship something! Our hearts were created to worship, and verses 3 and 4 make it crystal clear that Jesus is our person of worship! He made us!
- The object of creation is not to be worshipped, the Creator is to be worshipped. v.3 This can become a real danger! Even in the church! We may worship a preference of worship, a style tradition instead of worshipping Christ. Paul speaks of the danger of worshiping the creature over the Creator. “because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.” Romans 1:25
- Jesus is the builder, mankind is the house v.4
Jesus is the Way vv.5-6 How do we know that we are participants in the Heavenward calling (going back to verse one)? We know we are if we hold our confidence and our boasting in our hope in Jesus as Savior. John 14:6, Acts 4:12 “by no other name, must man be saved.” The third item that mankind must have is a way to God! the OT way to God was through the priest! They would walk into the Holy of Holies in the tabernacle or the temple. They would intercede for the sinner. Can you see the foreshadowing of Christ in the OT priest! It’s really a beautiful picture! Jesus is our way to God!
The Holy of Holies קֹדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים is a term in the Hebrew Bible which refers to the inner sanctuary of the Tabernacle where God’s presence appeared. The area was defined by four pillars which held up the veil of the covering, under which the Ark of the Covenant was held above the floor. The Ark according to Hebrew Scripture contained the Ten Commandments, which were given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai. King Solomon built the Temple in Jerusalem, where the Ark of the Covenant was supposed to be kept. Here is a picture of the Holy of Holies.
Hebrews 9:12 “he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.”
Hebrews 9:24-26 “For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.”
